How to Repair a Vinyl Swimming Pool Liner

How to Repair a Vinyl Swimming Pool Liner thumbnail
Keep your water in the pool by repairing tears in your liner.

Swimming pools hold large amounts of water. For the water to stay in the pool and not soak into and damage the pool base, a vinyl liner is needed. Vinyl liners act as a wall between the pool and surrounding ground. They keep water in the pool and keep the pool base safe. Liners are subject to constant strain and frequently are torn or ripped, allowing water to seep down into the pool base. Such rips are repaired with vinyl patch materials. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the patch material into a circle slightly larger than the tear being patched, using scissors. For long tears, cut the material into a rectangle slightly larger than the tear.

    • 2

Apply a layer of adhesive to the cut material, using waterproof adhesive. Cover the entire surface of one side of the patch with the adhesive.

    • 3

Press the patch strongly to the tear with the center of the patch over the center of the tear. Hold the patch still for at least 10 seconds, then run your hands over the patch to remove wrinkles in the material. Wear goggles if working underwater.

Tips & Warnings

  • Most pool supply stores sell patch kits that have the vinyl patch material and adhesive bundled together.
