Ryegrass is a type of turf grass that is native to Asia and Europe. There are roughly a dozen different types of ryegrass, however only two are commonly used in the U.S., according to Texas Cooperative Extension. These are perennial ryegrass and Italian ryegrass. Ryegrass prefers a climate that does not have extremes in temperature. It needs plenty of water and regular fertilizing. Ryegrass also tends to grow quickly and often requires mowing twice per week.
Things You'll Need
Select a fertilizer with a high nitrogen percentage, such as one with a formula labeled as 20-5-10, where the first number refers to the percentage of nitrogen.
Apply about 5 pounds of fertilizer with the 20-5-10 percentage to every 1,000 square feet of ryegrass, as recommended by the University of Missouri.
Fertilize ryegrass three separate times to encourage a healthy lawn and help prevent weeds. The University of Missouri recommends applying the fertilizer in September, November and May. When fertilizing in November, use a type of fertilizer that contains nitrogen from sources such as urea or ammoniacal nitrogen. In September and May, use a fertilizer that has water-insoluble nitrogen, such as sulfur-coated urea.
