How to Eat Freshwater Clams

How to Eat Freshwater Clams thumbnail
Freshwater clams can be prepared by opening and detaching the muscle inside from the shell.

Freshwater clams are mussels that are circular-shaped and make their own juices, known as clam liquor. You can purchase freshwater clams from your local fish store. These clams can survive in a wide range of temperatures, but the preferred temperature is a colder one such as that of a refrigerator. You can eat clams raw or cooked. Cooking normally consists of boiling, steaming or baking the clams. Once the mussels are prepared to be eaten, you must pry them open to get to the meat. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Scrub the freshwater clams with the kitchen scrub brush to remove all dirt and debris caught in the ridges. Rinse in clean water.

    • 2

Place the towel underneath the bowl to catch any drippings from the clams.

    • 3

Insert the flat edge of the clam or oyster knife into the edge of the shell directly across from the hinge of the shell.

    • 4

Move the knife in a semicircular motion on either side of the clam to open the shell. If you choose to break off the top shell, place it in the bowl with the clam liquor.

    • 5

Put the tip of the knife underneath the muscle of the clam. Dig carefully around the muscle in order to loosen the meat from the shell. Put each clam on the plate as you finish opening and loosening the meat.

    • 6

Cook as desired or eat raw.

Tips & Warnings

  • Leave mussels in the shell if you wish to steam or eat them raw. You can boil and bake the clams in the shells if desired, but it is not necessary.
