How to Turn Off the Sound on a Mac Altogether

You're taking a break from work and surfing the Web, when oh, no! A site starts automatically playing music! All eyes turn to you. You can avoid this embarrassment by muting all system sounds on your Mac.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Mac OS 9.0

    Using the Monitors & Sound Control Panel

  1. Step 1

    Click the Apple menu and select Control Panels.

  2. Step 2

    Click Monitors & Sound.

  3. Step 3

    Click the Sound icon. You can then mute the Computer System Volume.

  4. Step 4

    Click the Alerts icon to mute the System Alert Volume (the warning beep). When you do so, the Finder menu bar flashes instead.

  5. Using the Control Strip

  6. Step 1

    Click the Control Strip tab if the Control Strip is hidden. Locate the Sound Volume icon - it looks like a speaker.

  7. Step 2

    Click the Sound Volume icon. A volume slider pops up.

  8. Step 3

    Grab the slider and slide it down to the lowest volume. Let go of the slider.
