How to Change the Sound Volume on a Mac

As usual, there are at least two ways to do the same thing on a Mac. You get more options if you use the Monitors & Sound control panel, but the Control Strip can be faster.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

    Using the Control Strip

  1. Step 1

    Click the Control Strip tab, if the strip is hidden.

  2. Step 2

    Locate the sound volume icon: It looks like a speaker.

  3. Step 3

    Click on the sound volume icon. A volume slider pops up.

  4. Step 4

    Grab the slider and drag it down to lower the volume; drag it up to raise the volume.

  5. Step 5

    Let go of the slider. You will hear a confirming beep at the volume level you set.

  6. Using the Monitors & Sound Control Panel

  7. Step 1

    Click on the Apple menu and select Control Panels.

  8. Step 2

    Click on Monitors & Sound.

  9. Step 3

    Click on the Sound icon.

  10. Step 4

    Drag the slider to adjust the computer system volume.

  11. Step 5

    Click on the Alerts icon to change the volume for the computer's warning beep (alert).

  12. Step 6

    Drag the slider to adjust the alert sound volume.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can mute all system sounds, even the startup chime. But why would you want to? That sound tells you your Mac is healthy.
