French Knot Directions

Centers on a flower, eyes on a face, tittles on lowercase letters--if your embroidery design calls for single dots, make French knots with your embroidery thread. A French knot is a clean, raised dot that forms when you twist embroidery thread around your needle in a special stitch. Before attempting French knots in your design, practice the French knot stitch on a scrap piece of embroidery fabric until the stitch comes easily.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull the embroidery needle up through the fabric. Pull until all of the thread is through.

    • 2

Use one hand to hold the embroidery thread taut about 2 inches above the fabric. Use the other hand to twist the embroidery thread around the needle twice.

    • 3

Reinsert the embroidery needle into the fabric. Enter the needle at a point at least one woven thread away from the original point of exit.

    • 4

Pull the needle and embroidery thread all the way through from underneath the fabric. The twists in the thread will form the French knot.
