How to Draw a Guitar

How to Draw a Guitar thumbnail
Guitars are not difficult to draw.

Drawing a guitar entails combining a few key shapes into different positions and sizes. Before beginning a drawing, make sure you've set up your pencil and paper on a flat surface, in an area with adequate light for visibility. Pencils should be sharpened, or pens should have plenty of ink. The easiest type of guitar to draw is an acoustic guitar, which has simpler shapes than an electric guitar.

Instructions

    • 1

Observe a real acoustic guitar. Look at your own or find a picture of one. Before you begin drawing, take a visual picture in your mind. Notice major parts of the guitar like the neck, body, head and hole. Now set up your paper and get comfortable.

    • 2

Draw two circles, one on top of another. The top circle should be about half the size of the bottom circle, creating the image of the number 8. This is the beginning of the guitar's body.

    • 3

From the middle of the smaller circle, draw two vertical lines to create the neck of the guitar. The neck should be about the same length as the two circles.

    • 4

At the top of the neck, connect the two vertical lines with one horizontal line. Atop that, draw another shape to create the head, which is where the tuning pegs are located. Refer to your picture of a real guitar for a visual reference of the shape of the head.

    • 5

Draw a perfect circle at the other end of the neck for the hole of the guitar.

    • 6

The last major step before adding smaller details is making one continuous outline along the outside of the figure 8. Once this is accomplished, erase the 8, leaving just the outline.

    • 7

The instrument should already appear to be in the form of a guitar, but adding horizontal frets and vertical strings to the neck will enhance the image. Extend the strings all the way down past the hole to the middle of the larger circle. Draw a thin rectangle at the bottom of these strings to create the image of a bridge.

    • 8

You may also include six tuners on the head of the guitar, three on the left side and three on the right.

    • 9

If desired, you may also color the guitar. A light orange color is typical, but it's up to you which color you'd like your guitar drawing to be.

    • 10

Finish the drawing by adding any details you desire on your guitar.

Tips & Warnings

  • Drawing an electric guitar is similar, but simply requires that one side of the small circle stick out like a hook.

  • Be careful with sharpened pencils, because they could puncture your skin.

  • Also, never point a sharpened pencil toward your eyes.
