As an actress you are required to portray a character for film, television or theater in a believable manner. If you enjoy being challenged and working hard to perfect your talent then a career as an actress may be ideal. To start your career in Canada you must undergo training, obtain the proper materials and begin networking with industry professionals. Take note, making a full-time living off acting can be very challenging, but with dedication you can work within Canada in film, TV and stage productions.

  • Enroll in acting classes within your city. Whether you're a novice actress or a professional actor, acting classes will not only enhance your acting ability but also help you network with industry professionals. You may find acting classes by reviewing your local business listings or industry trade papers. Talent Box, Thespian Net and Actor Workshop offer listings of acting classes within Vancouver, Toronto, Ontario and other major cities within Canada. Ensure any acting class you enroll in teaches script analysis, character development, auditioning techniques and film/TV acting techniques.

  • Schedule a photo shoot with a photographer in your area to capture headshots. Headshots are black-and-white or color photographs showcasing your face from the shoulders-up. Photographers Direct offers a list of all professional headshot photographers in Canada.

  • Select three-to-five outfits for your photo shoot. Arrive at least 20 minutes early to your photo session to discuss poses and scenes with the photographer.

  • Review the prints from your photo shoot and select the best image to be reproduced. Contact a photography reproduction company within your area. Headshots should be printed on an 8 x 10 inch piece of paper with a glossy or matte finish. If you are unable to find a headshot photography reproduction company in your area you can use online companies, such as Comp Card Media, Rocket Repro or Colourgenics, Inc. All of the aforementioned companies offer reproduction services throughout Canada.

  • Contact talent agencies within a 100 mile radius of your home. Inquire with each agency to find out the actor submission policy. Most talent agencies require potential actors to submit a copy of his or her headshot with a resume on the back and a cover letter detailing experience and training. If you do not have any professional credits to list on your resume only include your headshot and a cover letter explaining your training as an actress. The Talent Agents & Managers Association of Canada offers a directory of all reputable talent agencies in Canada.

    After receiving your headshot/resume and cover letter a talent agency will deny or accept your request for an interview. During an interview you will most likely be asked to perform a short one-minute monologue and possibly perform a scene from a film or television script. If an agency feels they can secure work for you, you'll be offered a talent contract. Once signed to a talent agency you will be on the road to becoming a working actress in Canada.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you do not have any experience in acting take acting classes for one year before submitting your materials to a talent agency.
  • Never pay a talent agency to represent you. Agencies only make money from work secured through their efforts. If an agency requires a fee or demands you to take acting classes from a specific academy do not sign with the agency as it is a scam.
