How to Protect a Mac File or Folder

While it's not true password protection, you can protect certain Mac folders, and all Mac files and applications, from erasure or change.

These instructions work for Mac OS system 7.5 and later.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • BigSecret (Mac)
  • Diskguard
  • Empower (Mac)
  • Fileguard
  • Norton Disklock

    Protecting the System or Applications Folders

  1. Step 1

    Click on the Apple menu and select Control Panels.

  2. Step 2

    Click on the General Controls control panel.

  3. Step 3

    Click on the check box for Protect System Folder, Protect Applications Folder, or both.

  4. Step 4

    Close the control panel. Until you turn this protection off, you will be unable to add to or remove files from these folders.

  5. Write-Protecting Applications and Files

  6. Step 1

    Click on a file or application icon.

  7. Step 2

    Click on the File menu and select Get Info (or press Command-I). A window will open.

  8. Step 3

    Click on the Locked checkbox.

  9. Step 4

    Close the window.

Tips & Warnings
  • No one can make changes to Locked files - even you. This option is especially useful if you have a finished document that you don't want anyone to change.
