How to Draw Cartoon People
Drawing realistic people can be challenging for a beginning artist, but drawing cartoons can offer a way to experiment with drawing people. Drawing people as cartoons is less complicated because the figures require less detail, and can help the beginning artist learn the basics. It can also be a fun hobby, or even a way to eventually carve out a career as an artist. The best way to learn to draw cartoon people is to pick up a pencil and get started.

Begin by drawing the basic outline of your figure. Start with the head. Draw a basic circle or oval. Draw two big circles for eyes. The big circles give your character a wide-eyed, cartoon-like appearance. Draw a big ear on each side of the head, then sketch a few pencil lines on top for hair. Don't worry about making the hair lines perfect---the wilder, the better. A cartoon character can have crazy hair, so experiment with making it curly or sticking out all over.

Draw a round, bulbous nose and big smile. You can draw a wide u-shape for the mouth, then draw the same u-shape beneath the first. Sketch in big square teeth and put three or four pencil dots on each cheek for freckles.

Draw a skinny neck, wide shoulders, and a thinner torso, then add gangly arms and legs to give your cartoon character a lanky appearance. Consider drawing a big, wide tie with polka dots on your character. Finally, give him two big feet.

Color your cartoon character with colored pencils. Don't worry about using shading or too many details. Cartoon people typically have minimal facial details. A random dark line or two on the face can give your character all the definition it needs. Use bright colors to emphasize the cartoonish aspect of your drawing.
