How to Convert Windows Video Files to Work on a Mobile Phone

Many mobiles play back video in the 3GP format.

The Windows Media Video (WMV) file format, created and developed by Microsoft, contains highly compressed videos designed for online sharing. If you want to watch WMVs on your mobile phone, you'll first need to convert the file into a standard mobile format such as the 3GP container, which most mobiles can play. A group of online conversion sites can change WMVs into 3GPs for free.

Instructions

Media-convert.com

1. Launch any browser and go to media-convert.com (see Resources). Select "Choose File" and locate the WMV you want to turn into a 3GP file in the pop-up menu. Then click "OK" to pick it for conversion.

2. Choose "WMV" as your input format in the drop-down menu. Next, select "3GP" as your target container.

3. Click "OK" to convert the Windows Media Video. After the transfer finishes, click the link in the pop-up to download the 3GP.

1. Access mediaconverter.org in any Web browser (see Resources).

2. Choose "Upload a file" and find the WMV file for conversion. Then select "3GP" as your target format in the drop-down menu.

3. Choose "Start" to begin the WMV conversion. Once the transfer finishes, click the download link to receive the 3GP.

Zamzar.com

1. Load zamzar.com in any Internet browser (see Resources).

2. Select "Choose File" and find the WMV in the pop-up. Next, choose "3GP" as your target format in the drop-down menu.

3. Give Zamzar your email address in the "E-mail" portion of the web page and click "Convert." After the conversion completes, Zamzar sends an email containing your 3GP file.
