How to Drill a Hole in Hardened Steel

How to Drill a Hole in Hardened Steel thumbnail
Drilling a hole in steel can be done with the right bit.

Drilling through hard steel is nothing like drilling through wood. Wood is a very soft material compared to hard steel, and can be drilled through quickly using a wood bit without any lubrication. Hard steel should be lubricated with oil before you drill into it, and it's important that you use a cobalt bit and drill into the steel very slowly. When you are at the hardware store buying your drill bit, the package will clearly indicate if it's meant for steel. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Place the steel on top of a piece of wood so that when you drill through it you don't dull the bit on concrete or another hard surface.

    • 2

Place a small amount of oil on the area of the steel where you're going to drill your hole. The oil will help lubricate the drill and keep the temperature low.

    • 3

Drill very slowly into the steel so you do not damage the bit.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not use a wood bit to drill through steel. It will get ruined.
