How to Build Concrete Stepping Stones

Your stepping stone can be topped with a mosaic design.

Making concrete stepping stones is a great project for kids and adults alike. Children can have fun personalizing their stepping stones according to their own developing tastes while adults can make something nice to put in their gardens. All of the materials can be purchased at your local craft store for a relatively low price. There are kits available for this purpose as well but sometimes it's fun to make things from scratch and express your creativity.

Things You'll Need

• Concrete mix
• Plastic mold
• Mosaic tiles or other decorations
• Craft stick

Instructions

1. Mix the concrete according to the directions. This usually just involves adding water and stirring.

2. Pour the concrete into the mold. Allow it to set for a period of time so your decorations will stay on the surface and not sink too far down. The concrete package may have suggestions for the length of time needed to set.

3. Apply the decorations you've picked out, and be creative in your design. If you're using mosaic tiles, place them onto the concrete level with the top of the concrete for a smooth surface. Use the craft stick to write sayings, names, dates--whatever you want--in the cement.

4. Leave the concrete stepping stone in a cool, dry room to finish setting. Humidity and heat will slow this process. Let it sit for about 48 hours to ensure that it is completely cured.

5. Wipe the mosaic tiles and other decorations with a damp rag to remove any concrete that dried on them. Carefully remove the stepping stone from the mold and place in your yard.

Tips & Warnings

• You can always opt to not decorate your stepping stones and just use the concrete and mold to make useful stepping stones.
