How to Convert a Works Nine Document to an Open Office Document
Included with some mass manufactured laptops and desktops, Microsoft Works 9 acts as the lower-priced version of the Microsoft Office suite. Microsoft Works features word processor, spreadsheet, calendar and database programs. OpenOffice is a free, open-source productivity suite that features a word processor, spreadsheet, database, drawing program, math program and presentation creator. Open Microsoft Works. Click on "File," then "Open." Navigate to the Works 9 document (WPS file) that you wish to convert to ODT, and double-click it.

Click on "File," then "Save As." Select "RTF" as the "File type." Click on "Save."

Close Microsoft Works.

Open OpenOffice Writer. Click on "File," then "Open." Navigate to the RTF you just saved in Microsoft Works, and double-click the file.

Click on "File," then "Save As." Choose "ODT" as the "File type." Click "Save."

Tips & Warnings
Use an online converter such as Zamar if you do not have Microsoft Works. Note that some converters cost money to use or will leave ads or watermarks in the converted files.
