Golf balls can weigh no more than 1.62 ounces and must be at least 1.68 inches wide. Golf balls are subject to testing to ensure that they fit in the required regulations.

Familiarize yourself with the three different kinds of golf balls. They are balata, two piece and a combination of the two. A balata golf ball is designed to have less spin and give the player better control. The balata ball is a soft ball with a soft shell that allows you to give it good spin. Balata balls are the most expensive balls but they are the choice of professionals. The two piece balls are designed to allow the golfer to have a bit more range but sacrifices the good spin of a balata ball. Two piece balls have a heavier jacket and are less expensive. A ball that is a combination of the balata and two piece is a good choice for an intermediate player who wants some degree of spin with additional range.

Analyze your swing speed. Golfers with a slow swing speed, typically seniors and women, will want to pick a golf ball that will allow them to achieve maximum results. Golf balls with light weight construction are designed for these types of players because they catch air and will stay in flight longer. Because of the additional range, many men with normal swing speeds will choose to play this type of ball also. Your swing speed can be tested at most any pro shop or golf store.

Practice with a few selected golf balls. Considering your skill level and swing speed, pick a few balls that may fit into your game. Purchase a sleeve of each type of ball at any golf course pro shop and try them out at the practice area. Note how far you hit each type of ball, how softly it lands and the amount of spin you are putting on each. Based on those criteria pick the ball that best fits your golf game.
