Honor Black heritage during Black History Month in February or support the cause all year.

Whether taking an African-American studies course or celebrating Black History Month, you might receive a request to write a black history report. Black history involves the struggles of African-Americans to escape to freedom, desegregate the United States and achieve the right to vote and hold political offices as well as work toward further advancements for the black race. Because so much information exists on black history and important figures in black history, writing a report regarding this issue requires little effort and encourages sympathy.

Instructions

    • 1

Read the parameters of your black history report assignment sheet. From this syllabus you will learn the specifics of your assignment, such as whether you should follow a timeline and discuss several historical figures and events, or focus on one event or figure. If possible, limit yourself to one person or event in order to save on research time and stay within any word count limitations.

    • 2

Research the event or figure from black history that you plan to write your report about. Gather information from trusted sources such as BlackHistory.com and biography.com/blackhistory/ where you will find factually correct information. Research and read about different figures or events before you choose a topic to focus your report on. Figures to consider include Colin Powell, Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks and President Barrack Obama, and events to consider include signing of the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments to the U.S. Constitution and the historic "I have a dream" speech by Martin Luther King Jr..

    • 3

Avoid sounding biased in your report unless asked to contribute your opinion regarding the events and figures. While a supportive opinion receives acceptance, a derogatory opinion on your black history subject could cost you either your grade or your reputation, so be respectful of the issues you address in your report.

    • 4

Discuss within the report the immediate effects of the event or figure in black history and how that event or person continues to affect the modern world. Give an adequate description of the current state of the world when the figure lived or the event took place.

Tips & Warnings

  • Edit and rewrite your article bearing in mind style guidelines suggested by your assignment syllabus or your classroom instructor.
