How to Convert Contacts to Vcf

Save

The Vcf file format is the most widely accepted format for sharing contacts between computers and software programs. There are a wide range of programs that incorporate seamlessly into Microsoft Outlook and other mail programs that will convert the files with batch processing. However, most of these programs are relatively costly for the limited nature of the function that they perform. There is a free solution for Vista users that includes an additional step in the process but will achieve the same goal without any additional software needed.

Things You'll Need

  • Windows

Converting the Contact List in Vista and 7

  • Export the contact list from the email program into a compatible file format: CSV, LDIF, or Windows Address Book. The exact process for export will depend on the program being used, but the option is generally found under the "File" menu.

  • Press the "Start Menu" button and select "Windows Contacts" from the "All Programs" file list.

  • Select "Import" from the menu options and select the file created during the contact export process in step 1.

  • Select "Export" from the menu options once the file has been imported into Windows Contacts format and choose "vCards (Vcf)" as the output type.

  • Click "OK" and choose the destination folder for the new files.

  • Click "OK" when the conversion is complete and close the Windows Contacts program.

Converting Contacts to Vcf in XP and Lower

  • Export the contact list from the email program into a compatible file format: CSV, LDIF, or Windows Address Book. The exact process for export will depend on the program being used, but the option is generally found under the "File" menu.

  • Open Outlook Express. This program comes included by default but may need to be configured if it has never been used before.

  • Import the contacts file created in step 1. Select "File," "Import" from the Outlook Express menu. Select "Address Book" if the exported file is from a Windows address book file or "Other Address Book" if it was created from a different source or is in *.csv format.

  • Open the address book in Outlook Express and select a contact by clicking on it.

  • Select "File," "Save As" from the drop-down menu and choose "Business Card (vcf)" from the available file types and choose the output file destination.

  • Repeat this process for each contact that needs to be converted to Vcf.

Tips & Warnings

  • Individual contacts can be converted to Vcf individually and sent by email by right-clicking on them and selecting the appropriate option from the contextual menus. Freeware batch processing programs exist for Outlook users (not Outlook Express).
