It is important to follow proper procedure when sharpening lawn mower blades to make sure you do not hurt yourself or damage the blade. Wedge the block of wood against the blade you want to sharpen to keep it from shifting around.

Remove the nut that keeps the blade attached to the lawn mower using the wrench. Carefully pull the blade out once this is done.

Work the blade back and forth across the blade grinder at a 40 degree angle. Use smooth strokes without exerting too much pressure or force on the blade. Immediately stop grinding if the blade turns a straw color, and dip it into cold water as soon as possible.

Grind both sides of the blade evenly, then reattach the blade to the lawn mower once you are happy with its sharpness. Be very careful with the blade after it is sharpened, as you can easily cut yourself on the razor-like edges.
