The Best Way to Make Money in an at Home Business
Owning a home business can give you more freedom than working from a traditional office, but it's also not as secure as a regular job. There is no universal best way to make money in a home business--rather, each person needs to establish the way that works best for her. A home business may involve selling something, taking on freelance work or consulting with business owners. When you understand your strengths and weaknesses, you'll be able to find the right way to run your own business.

1
Assess your personality to find the right home business for you. The greatest key to success is to find something that you love doing. If you like interacting with other people, you may find success by creating a business selling items. However, if the thought of selling items makes you cringe, you'd be better off creating a business doing something else, such as freelance writing, bookkeeping at home, tutoring, tax preparation or data processing.

2
Decide how you want to advertise and track the success of your advertising campaigns. All businesses will need some form of advertising to gain customers, but different types of advertising may work better for certain businesses. For example, if you have a home day care center, you may find that your best advertising methods are putting fliers up in the library or posting in classified ads. A home beauty shop, on the other hand, may do well by placing coupon ads in the newspaper. When trying a new advertising method, track how successful it is by including text that says "Mention this ad for a discount."

3
Treat your business as real work. One of the challenges of working at home is that other pressures--family needs, household chores and television, for example--can sometimes get in the way of your work. You may do well if you dress up rather than trying to work in your pajamas. You should also set some business hours and let your family know that you cannot be disturbed during that time.
-
4
Keep track of your finances. When working from home, your tax situation becomes a lot more complicated than a typical employee's situation. You have to keep track of your expenses, so that you can deduct them, and you may have to make estimated tax payments. Hiring an accountant can help you to stay organized and on top of things.
-
5
Focus on the core aspects of your business. Do the things that you do best. Create a list of things that you need to get done for your business and start by doing the things that are most likely to bring in the most money. As your business grows, hire outside people to do tasks that can eat away at your time and profits. For example, your talent may lie in marketing and recruiting more customers, but you may spend a lot of time doing your bookkeeping because that's not your strong point. In your case, you should hire someone to do bookkeeping, so that you can spend more time marketing and growing your business.
