How to Deal With Salespeople
Too many people take out their annoyance with salespeople who, admittedly, are probably being difficult or pushy. But if you have never been in that salesperson's shoes, you probably won't understand. Try not to be rude when dealing with salespeople. You might be wondering how you can deal with them without being taken advantage of. There are things you can do that will get your point across without appearing mean or malicious.

1
Avoid unwanted encounters with salespeople. Sign up with the Telephone Preference Service (if you live in the UK) or the National Do Not Call Registry (if you live in the U.S.). Tell your friends and family to call before coming over and don't open the door for anyone who didn't call. If it's important, he will call. If it's the delivery person, she will leave a paper notification. Screen your calls by not answering any phone calls from numbers you don't know. Again, if it is important, the caller will leave a message.

2
Install a chain lock on your door so that you can open it without giving the caller an opportunity to come in. Never let a salesperson in your house. First of all, if they are in your house it will be more difficult to get them to leave. They can then talk until they are finished with their pitch and then you are stuck arguing with them. Another reason not to let an unfamiliar person in is because she might not actually be a salesperson and opening the door could put you in danger.

"Call their bluff," according to John Seeley from Get Unstuck. If you are actually purchasing something and the salesperson is trying to take advantage of you, let her know of your expertise in the area of subject. If you are not an expert, then act like you are one. To do so, you can respond with, "Oh I know" or "I've read differently" or "In my experience, that's not always the case." Let him know you are not going to be persuaded into anything you don't want to do by acting knowledgeable about the products and letting her know exactly what you are looking for.

Say "No thank you!" If you are in line at a store, grab your purchase, smile, say "No thank you," and walk away. If you are on the phone, say "No thank you. Have a nice day and good luck," and then hang up. If he is at your door, open it with the chain locked and then say, "No thank you, but good luck," and close the door. Be polite, but brief.

Ask to speak to his manager if he is still being pushy and you can't make a break for it. If the pushy salesman is the manager, report the business to the Better Business Bureau.
