How Can I Set Up My Computer to Send & Receive Fax Messages?
You do not need a dedicated fax machine with a built-in printer to send and receive faxes. You can set up your computer to do these tasks by purchasing a relatively inexpensive software package. You may also need to purchase a fax modem card, although most computers have one already installed.
Instructions

-
1
Check to see whether your computer has a fax modem card installed. Click "Start," then "Control Panel" in the right-hand column. You will be taken to a new window.
-
2
Click "Hardware and Sound." Scroll down until you come to "Phone and Modem Options." Click this icon. A dialog box will open.
-
-
3
Click the "Modem" tab. You will see a list of any modems installed on your computer. If your computer has a modem installed and it is operational, its name will appear highlighted. Next to it, and under the words "Attached to," a communications port name, such as "COM3," will appear.
-
4
If no fax modem is installed, purchase one from an electronics vendor. Make sure the brand you select is compatible with your computer's operating system. You will also need to buy fax software.
-
5
Install the modem according to the manufacturer's instructions. Once installed, the device will be automatically recognized by your computer, and the necessary drivers will be installed.
-
6
Verify that your modem is installed and operational by repeating Steps 1 through 3. If the modem name does not appear and/or it has not been assigned a port, click "Add," then click "Next."
-
7
Install the fax modem manually if Windows still fails to find it. Click "Next." Select your modem's manufacturer from the list on the right and the model from the list on the left. Click "Next."
-
8
Accept Windows' default port assignment. Click "OK."
-
9
Install your fax software by following the software maker's instructions.
-
10
Start up the fax software to begin sending or receiving faxes. To send a fax, click or select "New fax." In the dialog box that appears, enter the name of the recipient and company affiliation. Then enter the recipient's fax number.
-
11
Type a cover letter, if desired. Attach the document you wish to fax. Click "Send."
