How to Write on Aluminum Tags
Aluminum tags can help you identify important features or fixtures in areas that might destroy paper tags, such as damp areas and mildly acidic environments. Metal tags can also be used as decorative items and charms for craft purposes. Unfortunately, ink will not stay on aluminum tags; even permanent markers can rub off with a light abrasive. To write on aluminum tags in a manner that will last, use an engraving tool, available from most craft stores. These tools use vibrating metal points to scratch designs or words into the metal. They take some getting used to, but once you learn to control the tool, you can write anything you want on your aluminum tags.

1
Lay a piece of felt on your work surface and set the aluminum tag on top of it, near the table's edge. The felt will keep the metal from scratching the table's surface.

2
Clamp the tag to the table using a foam-padded pressure clamp if one is available. If not, use a standard metal C-clamp, but place masking tape over the part that will hold your tag so the clamp won't scratch the metal. If you are right-handed, place the clamp on the left side of the tag, covering as little of the metal as possible. Reverse this if you are left-handed.

Plug in and switch on the engraving tool. Use gentle strokes to write your message on the tag, holding and using the tool just like a pen or pencil. Don't press too hard or you may dent the aluminum. Instead, use slow, gentle, steady strokes. Your precision will improve with practice.

Tips & Warnings
Always use a sharp tip for engraving. Dull tips can make engraving more difficult and result in poor-quality work.
Engraving tools can cause small amounts of metal dust and flakes to become airborne. Wear safety gear, such as goggles, gloves and a dust mask, to prevent injury.
