DIY Double Bed

Building your own bed frame has two advantages over buying a prefabricated one from the store. The materials will cost you less than half the price of a comparable store-bought frame. Also, you can make sure you have exactly the frame you want because, after all, you built it to spec. Starting from a basic platform core, you can build a simple full frame and leave it at that. Or, if you're more experienced and motivated, use this as a beginning on which to build more impressive frames. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Sand all surfaces of your lumber. Wipe them free of sawdust.

    • 2

Apply one coat of paint or stain to all surfaces of the lumber. Allow to dry.

    • 3

Set the three beams on the floor, parallel to one another and with their ends aligned. The center of the inside beam should be 27 inches from the outside edge of each exterior beam. All beams should rest on their narrowest, 2-inch-wide faces.

    • 4

Lay the plywood sheet on top of the beams with its long sides flush with the outside edges of the exterior beams and the short sides flush with the ends of the beams.

    • 5

Screw the plywood sheet to the beams with three lines of seven evenly spaced wood screws. Drive the screws through the plywood and into the mid line of the beam beneath.

    • 6

Apply a final coat of paint or stain to the exposed faces of the lumber. Allow to dry.

Tips & Warnings

  • More ornate and ambitious projects can start with this platform. Simply connect it to the fancier frame using bolts or attached legs.
