How to Fix XP on a Dell Dimension 3000
Dell Dimension 3000 computers installed with Windows XP are provided with a Windows XP disk to reinstall or fix Windows XP. Sometimes installations do not complete properly, resulting in the need to fix or repair the installation. Virus infections can also damage Windows XP installations on a Dell Dimension. You have the choice of either reinstalling Windows XP or repairing it to fix the problem.

Back up all files before fixing XP.

Insert the Windows XP disk into your Dell Dimension 3000’s disk drive.

Reboot your computer and press any key to boot from the CD.

Press “Enter” on the screen that states “To setup Windows XP now.”

Press “Enter” on the welcome screen and press “F8” to agree to the license agreement.

Choose whether to reinstall Windows XP or repair the current installation. Select the partition Windows XP is currently installed on and press “R” to repair the installation. Select the partition Windows XP is currently installed on and press “Enter” to reinstall Windows XP.

Follow the prompts in the repair wizard if you are repairing the installation to finish the installation process, which repairs and replaces any corrupt or missing files.

Select the format the partition with the NTFS (New Technology File System) file system if you are reinstalling XP. NTFS is the preferred file system used by Windows 2000 and later and is considered by Microsoft to be more reliable and secure. You must have a file system in order to install XP, open files and install applications.

Allow the partition to format. Your computer will restart once the format is complete.

Follow the prompts to set up your computer name, time zone and network settings.

Insert any drivers or applications disks provided with your Dell Dimension 3000 to reinstall drivers and applications. The installation process for both drivers and applications is in a wizard format. Exact steps will vary based upon each individual driver and application.

Tips & Warnings
Try repairing the installation first. Reinstall Windows XP if the problem still exists. This will erase all files on the Windows XP partition and allow you to restore your system to factory settings.
Do not enter the Recovery Console that is presented before the licensing agreement. This is not the correct repair mode for the Dell Dimension 3000 and is only for advanced users.
