Things You'll Need
- Face mask
- Heavy-duty gloves
- Tarp
- Rag
- Vacuum with brush attachment
- Screwdriver

Put on your heavy-duty gloves and face mask. The gloves will prevent you from getting your hands dirty and in contact with mold or spore allergens, and the mask will prevent you from breathing in dirty air.

Move anything on the floor directly under the entrance to the air duct, to prevent dust or debris from falling. Cover the floor with a clear tarp.

Remove the opening to the air duct with a screwdriver. Use a dry rag to wipe down the walls of the air duct, removing dirt, dust or pet hair.

Place the vacuum hose with brush extension deep into the air duct to suck up dust and hair that you are unable to reach with a rag. Hire a professional duct-cleaning company to clean further than you can reach once a year, and the company will also use products to kill mold or spores for a thorough cleaning.

Replace the grill or air duct covers back to their proper location, and secure them with the screwdriver. Wipe them down with a rag to remove any dust from the cover.
