How to Fluff a Feather Bed

A feather bed is actually a mattress topper that's traditionally filled with duck or goose feathers or down. A modern feather bed is sometimes filled with polyester. It's placed on top of a mattress for a soft, comfortable feel. Because of its special filling, a feather bed will keep you toasty warm in the winter and cool in the summer. After this type of mattress topper has been used for awhile, its filling tends to flatten. When that happens, it needs fluffed up so it's thick again. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the feather bed topper from the bed. Fold it loosely and take it outside.
If the feather bed has a cover, remove it, and launder if needed.

    • 2

Hold the mattress topper by a short side. Shake it gently to fluff up the filling material, according to Pure n Natural. Grab the other short side and shake the feather bed again.

    • 3

Place an old bed sheet over a tall, clean surface such as a swing set or a railing. The sheet will keep the feather bed from getting soiled. Carefully hang the mattress topper over the sheet. Allow it to air out for a few hours. Flip the feather bed over occasionally to fluff it back up, according to Overstock.

Tips & Warnings

  • Take the feather bed outside on a regular basis to fluff it up and air it out, according to Pure n Natural.

  • If the filling in the mattress topper becomes lumpy and uneven, simply redistribute it with your hands. With the feather bed spread out on a flat surface, use your palm and forearm to push the feathers or polyester so bare or thin spots are filled in.
