How to Trim & Care for Encore Azaleas

Encore Azaleas are a patented brand of azaleas that were created by crossing traditional spring-blooming azaleas with the rare Taiwanese summer-blooming azalea, Rhododendron oldhamii, says the Encore website. Thus, if you want to add color to your landscaping year-round, these azaleas are a good choice because they blossom during nine months out of the year, providing constant color and beauty to your yard. The flowering shrubs are easy to grow, so you do not need a lot of gardening experience to trim and care for your Encore Azaleas. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. Care

    • 1

Feed the azaleas with a slow-release granular azalea fertilizer from your garden center. A well-balanced mix will be indicated through three numbers on the bag of fertilizer. One is the amount of nitrogen, which promotes the growth of the plant, the second is phosphorus, which helps blooming, and the last is potassium, which increases the strength of the plant branches. If the numbers are similar or close in range, it is a well-balanced fertilizer.

    • 2

Fertilize at the beginning of the spring season, but make sure that the chance of frost has passed. It is only necessary to fertilize during the spring. However, if you want to do it once again, add fertilizer at the beginning of August to last through the fall and winter.

    • 3

Add a liquid fertilizer to the plants every two weeks for added foliage and increased root health.

    • 4

Keep the soil consistently moist during the spring, summer and early fall months. During the winter, water less frequently but do not allow the roots to dry out. Use a plant insulating cover to keep younger plants safe during the freezing winter months.

    Trimming

    • 5

Even out the plants if you desire. Encore Azaleas do not require pruning, but you may do so to increase bud growth.

    • 6

Use the hand shears to create a more uniform shape with the plant, pruning away branches that are growing outside of the natural plant shape.

    • 7

Trim the plant according to preference. If you want the plant to look tight, trim away anything that is feathered out from the plant or you may leave it alone to give it a more natural appearance.
