White out, or correction fluid, can leave behind stains on any object that it touches. If you notice it on wood around your home, you will need to follow the right precautions to remove it. Correction fluid is available in both a water and petroleum base, and each base requires a different removal technique. Once you remove the substance successfully, your wood will be restored back to its original condition without the stain.
Things You'll Need
- Butter knife
- Citrus cleaner
- Mineral spirits
Allow the correction fluid to dry completely.
Scrape the dried substance off the wood. Use a dull butter knife or the edge of a coin to remove the correction fluid.
Test the area to determine whether the correction fluid is water or petroleum based. Wipe the stain with warm and soapy water. If the substance removes easily with the soap, water and washcloth, you will not need to take any additional action. If the correction fluid remains, you will need to remove it by other means.
Apply a citrus cleaner or mineral spirits to an inconspicuous area. Mineral spirits can change the color of the wood and can ruin varnish. Test the cleaner or mineral spirits on a hidden area, and then apply it directly to the stain. Rub the mineral spirits or citrus cleaner on the substance with a cotton ball.
Rinse the area with clean water. Dry the wood with a clean cloth to prevent mold and mildew.
