Dell Precision WorkStation 620: Connecting without cables

Taking the Dell Precision WorkStation 620 wireless is a simple procedure that should take about 10 minutes of your time. You can access the expansion card area easily after you get the cover off the computer tower. Once you've gotten inside the computer, you can install a wireless network card without a hitch and cut out some of the cables that have been making a mess around your desk.

Instructions

    • 1

Shut down the computer and disconnect the power cable.

    • 2

Disconnect all the peripheral devices from the system.

    • 3

Move the computer tower to an open space and turn it so that the back faces you.

    • 4

Locate the padlock ring on the bottom part of the back wall of the computer tower.

    • 5

Press the top side of the padlock ring to the left and lift the right cover off the computer.

    • 6

Slide the top of the computer cover toward the right side of the computer to disengage the tabs that secure the cover to the top of the computer. Remove the cover.

    • 7

Lay the computer on its left side and locate the expansion card area, which is just inside the lower part of the back wall, opposite the padlock ring (you can see the expansion card slots on the back of the computer).

    • 8

Use a Phillips screwdriver to extract the screw on the metal brace that goes over the expansion card area. Lift the brace out of the computer.

    • 9

Align the wireless network card with an empty expansion card bracket and slide it straight into the connector.

    • 10

Connect any cables on the card to their appropriate ports (see your card's documentation to verify the appropriate connection point). If there are no cables, move on to the next step.

    • 11

Replace the expansion card brace and the screw that secures it.

    • 12

Begin with step 7, going back through step 1, to assemble the computer and start it up.

    • 13

Install any software that came with the wireless network card. Check with your card's documentation for installation instructions, as there may be a disc or a location from which to download the software. Once the software installation is complete, the card is ready for use.
