How to Remove Sweat Stains From Tee Shirts

Save

Sweating is the body's way of regulating its temperature. Sweat contains toxins and waste which include phosphate, urea, oil and salt. When you sweat onto your clothes and it starts to evaporate, these waste materials also evaporate and cause unsightly, embarrassing stains. Sweat stains can be yellow or green on white clothes, and may even cause colored shirts to fade in the armpit area. Although sweat stains are tricky to remove, take the time to try a simple home remedy before tossing your tee shirt in the trash.

Things You'll Need

  • Warm water
  • White vinegar
  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Baking soda

Colored T-Shirts

  • Mix 2 cups warm water with 4 tablespoons white vinegar.

  • Place your stained shirt in the solution and soak for 30 minutes. Launder as usual. Allow the shirt to air dry and inspect for any traces of the stain.

  • Mix 4 tablespoons of baking soda with 1/4 cup warm water to make a paste. Apply the paste to the sweat stains on your shirt, rub into the fabric and let sit for an hour. Launder as usual.

White T-Shirts

Tips & Warnings

  • For best results, treat the stain as soon as possible.
  • If the treatment is not successful the first time, you may need to repeat it.
  • Never place a stained shirt in the dryer as the heat will set the stain permanently.
  • Do not use hydrogen peroxide on colored shirts as it can bleach the fabric.
