How to File for an AA Degree
An AA degree is an Associate of Arts degree, which is granted by an accredited community college or university. In order to graduate, you would need to file your intent to complete the AA degree and receive a diploma. The name of the form to declare your intent may vary from one college to another, so make sure you are aware of what form you need to file. You would need to file this form to notify your college of your intent to graduate, so they can make the necessary preparations to grant you the AA degree.

Obtain a copy of the degree requirements for your major. Each college has a list of degree requirements that a student must complete to be awarded a degree. This list may be available as a stand-alone copy from your department. It may also be found in your college's catalog. The degree requirements may be divided into two sections: one for general education requirements, and the other for major requirements.

Print a copy of your transcript. Your may be able to access your transcript online, and having a hard copy of your transcript will make it easier for you to mark those requirements you have satisfied. Make sure this copy is itemized, and that the final grade is listed for each class. This will help you determine later on what requirements you have successfully completed.

Go over the list of degree requirements and for each requirement listed, check your transcript to see if you have satisfied it. Your college may have stringent regulations regarding satisfying a requirement. You may need to have a certain GPA, or have completed a class with a C or higher, in order for the college to count the requirement as "satisfied."

Get a copy of the AA degree filing form. This may also be called the candidacy form. You may contact your academic counselor to obtain this form, or you can go to your college's records office. Depending on the policies of your college, you may need to attach a transcript to prove that you have completed the requirements for your major.

Submit your paperwork before the deadline. Deadlines vary per college, with some colleges requiring you to submit the form a semester before your intended date of graduation, while others may have an extended deadline allowing you to file as late as a month before your graduation date. It is advisable that you submit the form as early as possible since your file may be sent back if they need more information on your part.
