Templates can help users make a professional document, such as a business card.

One popular feature of Word 2007 is the ability to load templates, which are preformatted documents that help users get started in creating their documents. Templates, which can be downloaded off the Microsoft Office website, can be virtually anything, such as business cards, resumes or wedding invitations. Users can even create their own templates to help them with future projects or to help business partners keep the same formatting.

Instructions

    • 1

Open a new Word 2007 document to begin creating the template.

    • 2

Insert placeholder text. Placeholder text is usually generic words or phrases inserted onto a template that users will modify when they open the template. For instance, on a business card placeholder text may read, "Business name." Users who will be creating business cards with the template will then replace those words with their business's name. Insert placeholder text by typing the placeholder text into the document.

    • 3

Insert graphics. Users can insert almost any type of graphic into a Word 2007 template, such as photos or WordArt. Insert graphics by either copying and pasting it into the template or by clicking the "Insert" tab then choosing your desired graphic-type in the "Illustration" section.

    • 4

Choose a color theme by clicking the "Page Layout" button and clicking "Themes" on the far-left side of the Ribbon. A list of themes will appear. Choose a theme that best suits your template. Themes set the fonts and colors of all text in a document. This can help the template appear professional and organized and prevent template users from altering its intended appearance and design.

    • 5

Format the template. You can format the template using the same methods you would format any other document. Click the "Page Layout" tab to display numerous formatting options in the Ribbon, such as indents, spacing, page breaks and margin width.

    • 6

Click the Microsoft Office button in the upper left corner of the document when you have finished designing the template, then choose "Save as" from the resulting menu.

    • 7

Type the template's name in the "File Name" text box.

    • 8

Click the drop-down arrow in the "Save as type" box and choose "Word Template."

    • 9

Browse your file folders and choose a place to save the template.

    • 10

Click "Save" to finish making the template in Word 2007.
