How to Check on the Usage of RAM with Windows XP

RAM (Random Access Memory) on Windows XP allows your computer to read and write data. The more RAM your computer has, the faster your CPU (central processing unit) can read data from your hard disk. Every program, application or system component uses RAM--some more than others. It is important to know how much RAM the programs and processes running on your computer are using. You can improve your computer's efficiency by closing any programs that consume a lot of RAM when you are not using them.

Instructions

    • 1

Press "Ctrl," "Alt and "Delete" simultaneously to launch the task manager. Click the "Performance" tab.

    • 2

Locate the value next to "Total" under "Physical Memory." This value represents the total amount of RAM on your computer. Locate the value next to the "Total" section under "Commit Charge." This value represents how much RAM is being used by programs and processes.

    • 3

Click the "Processes" tab if you want to see the programs running on your computer and how much RAM each is using. The value on the right side of every program's "Memory Usage" represents how much RAM the program is using. If you want to disable a program, click its process and click "End Process."
