How to Register Business Names in Florida

Save

Registering a business name in Florida is easy to do entirely online through the Florida Department of State Division of Corporations website linked below. But before you can register a business name, you must advertise it at least once in a newspaper in the county where you plan to use the business name. This advertisement can be in the form of a graphical or classified ad. When you sign the name registration form online, you attest that you met the advertising requirement.

  • Advertise the Florida business name you want to use at least once in a local newspaper, either with a graphical ad or a classified ad.

  • Visit the Florida Department of State Division of Corporations, Fictitious Name Registration link below. On this page you can read about the purpose and limitations of registering a business name in Florida as well as the associated fees.

  • Check the disclaimer at the bottom and click the "Add Fictitious Name Registration" link below it.

  • Complete the online application form by providing basic contact information and then adding your electronic signature at the bottom. You can either pay with credit card online or print the application and send it in with a check. The fee is $50 unless you opt for an additional certificate of status for $10 more or a certified copy for an additional $30.

  • Wait for a response letter from the Florida Department of State Division of Corporations verifying that your business name has been registered.
