How to Repair a PVC Roof

Save

PVC roofing often exceeds its life expectancy. Although a durable roofing material, over time, PVC roofing can weather and develop water leaks around seams, or sharp objects can puncture the PVC membrane. With the right method, you can repair punctures and lifted seams on a PVC roof. When working on a PVC roof, use proper ladder safety techniques, and ensure that the surface of the roof is free of moisture.

Things You'll Need

  • Extension ladder
  • Rubber gloves
  • Acetone
  • Steel wool
  • Clean dry rag
  • PVC repair tape
  • Utility knife
  • Metal seam roller
  • Set up the extension ladder. Make sure the top rung of the extension ladder extends three feet beyond the edge of your home's roof. This will allow you to safety mount and exit the roof.

  • Inspect the PVC roof to find the leak(s) you need to repair. When you find a leak, proceed to Step 3.

  • Put on a pair of rubber gloves.

  • Pour acetone on the steel wool. Scrub a 4-inch wide area around the repair with the steel wool.

  • Wipe the repair area with a clean dry rag to remove the residue from the surface of the PVC roof.

  • Pull a length of repair tape from the roll. When you have a length of repair tape 4 inches longer than the repair area, separate the length of repair tape from the roll with the utility knife.

  • Remove the backing paper from the cut piece of repair tape.

  • Press the tape firmly onto the PVC roofing material. Make sure the leaking section of the PVC roof is in the center of the repair tape.

  • Smooth out the repair tape by running the metal seam roller over the tape until no bubbles remain.

  • Repeat the listed steps to fix each leak you find on the PVC roof.
