How to Assemble a Hat Stand

How to Assemble a Hat Stand thumbnail
Learn to assemble a hi-hat stand.

The hi-hat stand is an essential piece of hardware for any modern drum kit. All drummers will have the opportunity or necessity of breaking down and reassembling a hi-hat stand. The hi-hat stand houses two small cymbals that sit on top of each other that are aligned to each other by a metal rod that runs through the center of both cymbals. The bottom, or static, cymbal stays in one place, while the top cymbal can be adjusted, or moved up and down to create a tight percussive sound or a loud crashing sound.

Instructions

    • 1

Loosen the T-screw located at the base of the hi-hat stand near the foot pedal. Spread the the tripod legs until the hi-hat stand's base sits flat on the ground.

    • 2

Locate the upper and lower pull rods. The pull rod moves the upper hi-hat up and down once attached to the foot pedal. Insert the threads on the upper pull rod to the threads on the bottom pull rod. Thread the two rods together until they fit tightly together so as to become a single rod.

    • 3

Insert the lower tube that houses the pull-rod into the base of the hi-hat stand, and then thread the tube into the hi-hat base until it sits firmly in the vertical position. Insert the pull-rod assembly into the lower tubing, and then thread the pull-rod to the base of the hi-hat stand.

    • 4

Insert the upper tube into the lower tube, hold the upper tube in place with one hand, and then place the t-screw clamp around the upper tube. Slide the clamp down until it butts up against the lower tube. Tighten the T-screw until the upper tube is firmly fastened in one place.

    • 5

Place the lower hi-hat cymbal felt on top of the upper tube assembly. Place the bottom hi-hat cymbal on top of the felt so it sits horizontally on the hi-hat stand.

    • 6

Locate the hi-hat clutch assembly that came with your hi-hat. Remove the lock nut and felt washer from the bottom of the clutch. Hold the clutch in one hand with the bottom threads of the clutch facing upward. Slide the top hi-hat cymbal onto the clutch, and then slide the felt washer onto the clutch until it butts against the bottom of the hi-hat cymbal. Fasten the lock nut until the hi-hat cymbal is tightly fastened to the clutch assembly. Thread the T-screw into the threads located on the side of the clutch assembly. Leave room for the clutch to slide onto the pull-rod.
