How to Build a House in Google SketchUp
Google SketchUp is a 3D modeling program offered by Google in both a purchasable and freeware version. The freeware version more than meets the needs of the average user. For example, if you are attempting to design a new house and want to make clear to your architect exactly what you have in mind, then you can use SketchUp to create a basic representation of the house you want to build. In addition to allowing you to explain your ideas to the architect, this model will allow you to refine those ideas and make changes.

1
Use pen and paper to draw out what you want the house to look like. These rough drawings can be used as a reference when you start working in SketchUp.
-
2
Open SketchUp. Select "Camera" in the men and choose "Standard Views." From the options, choose "Top."
-
-
3
Go to the toolbar and select the "Line" tool. Use it to draw out the outer shape of your house. Reference the numerical readout on the lower right to make sure you are making the lines the right length. Drag on the view with the middle mouse button to switch back to the "Perspective" view.
-
4
Use the "Line" tool to draw lines on the inside of your house for where the walls will be. Then select the "Push/Pull" tool and use it to raise the exterior and interior walls to the correct height (referencing your drawings).
-
5
Use the "Line" tool to close the open roof you now have. Use the "Erase" tool to remove the lines on top. If you need a second floor, use the technique shown in step 4 to make it.
-
6
Use the "Line" tool to draw in a line to represent the roof ridge. Then use the "Move" tool to raise the line to the height that you want for the roof.
-
7
Select "File" from the menu and click "Save." In the dialog that appears, name your file and save it.
