How to Play Custom Songs on Guitar Hero 3

Adding custom songs to your PC copy of Guitar Hero III is an easy, but time consuming, process. You will need to download a couple of programs to help add songs to the Guitar Hero III playlist, including Song List Editor and Chart2Mid2Chart. You will also need what is called a "chart file" of the song you want to add to your game. These are used to show the frets you need to press while playing the game and can be downloaded from the Chart Library from the Score Hero website.

      Download the Song List Editor Program and install it on your computer. Open the program by selecting it from the Programs sub-menu on your Start menu.

      Click "File" and select "Open" from the Song List Editor window. A prompt window will appear asking you to "Browse for Folder." Click "OK."

      Create an account with scorehero.com. You only need an email address to join. Log into your account and click the "Custom Songs" link located near the top of the page. Agree to the terms and conditions of the site and click the "Browse Database" link.

      Search for the song you want to add to your Guitar Hero III game. You can browse by title, artist and album. Click the "Search Charts" button and browse the search results. Download the chart file corresponding to your song to your desktop.

      Download the Chart2Mid2Chart program and install it on your computer. Open the Chart2Mid2Chart folder and locate the Chart2Mid.jar file; double-click it to run the program.

      Click the "Browse" button and find the chart file you downloaded to your desktop earlier. Click "OK" and select the "Guitar Hero" option on the Chart2Mid2Chart window. Click the "Convert" button and let the program complete the process. A midi file of your song will be created and saved to your Desktop.

      Run Song List Editor and click the "Insert New Song" button. A prompt window will pop-up. Type the "Song Name" in all lowercase letters. Click the "Browse" button next to the "Guitar Track" field and locate the MP3 or OGG file of your song. Double click the file to fill in the field automatically. Copy the information in the "Guitar Track" field to the "Rhythm Track" and "Song Track" fields.

      Click the "Browse" button next to the "Midi file" field and locate the Midi file you created earlier; double-click the file name to automatically fill in the field. Fill in the "Song Title," "Artist" and "Year" fields; this information will be displayed when you play the song in the game. Click the "OK" button and a new window will pop up to display the progress of the file creation. When you see the phrase "done creating fsb," the file will be ready to use.

      Click the "Edit Setlists" button on the Song List Editor window. A "Setlist Editor" window will pop up. Click the "Set List" field and select "Bonus Songs." Increase the value in the "Songs per Tier" field by one. Click the "Song Number" field and select whichever song is at the bottom of the list. Click the "Song" field and select the song you added earlier. Click the "OK" button. Click "File" and select "Save" from the drop-down menu. Click "OK" when the prompt window appears. Launch your copy of Guitar Hero III and you'll find the song you added in the list of bonus songs.
