How to Read E-mail on a Palm Device

Palm Computing markets the Palm device as a companion to your desktop. Given that, the built-in e-mail capabilities of the Palm allow you to read your desktop e-mail ' mail that's been downloaded to your desktop mail application ' on your handheld. If these built-in capabilities aren't enough, you'll need a modem for your Palm as well as Internet connectivity and another e-mail program.

Things You'll Need:

    Read Desktop E-mail on Your Palm

  1. Step 1

    You must be using a PC to synchronize your e-mail with your handheld.

  2. Step 2

    When you installed the Palm Desktop, you should have been prompted with a Mail Setup wizard. If you set up your mail at this time, you're all set.

  3. Step 3

    Run Mail Setup if you don't have it set up or if you're not certain. It should be accessible when you choose Palm from the Programs menu. If not, locate it in your Palm folder.

  4. Step 4

    Choose the appropriate e-mail client. Be certain the e-mail client is set up as your default e-mail program.

  5. Step 5

    Click the HotSync Manager icon in the Windows task bar. Choose Custom, then be sure the Mail conduit is set to Synchronize.

  6. Step 6

    HotSync your device. Messages in the inbox of your desktop e-mail application should now be viewable on your Palm.

  8. Step 1

    To read Internet e-mail on your Palm, you'll need to obtain a few things. Purchase either the Palm modem, a wireless modem or a cable to connect your external modem to your Palm.

  9. Step 2

    Search for a third-party Palm e-mail program that suits you. There are some shareware programs that let you access your POP mail accounts from your normal ISP or work account. There are also e-mail programs that create accounts specifically for your Palm.

  10. Step 3

    Install your third-party e-mail program.

  11. Step 4

    Tap Prefs, then choose Modem to configure your modem settings.

  12. Step 5

    Choose Network to configure your network settings to reach your Internet provider.

Tips & Warnings
  • Forward your regular e-mail to your Palm e-mail if you're going to be away from your computer for a while.
