How to Tie Christmas Bows for a Tree Topper

Tie ribbon bows on branches for a festive look.

Break away from the traditional star or angel on the top of your Christmas tree this year. For a stunning, festive look, tie on a big ribbon bow as your Christmas tree topper.

Things You'll Need

• 2 1/2 yards of double-face ribbon
• Measuring tape
• Scissors
• Florist's wire

Instructions

1. 

   Measure twice, cut once.

   Cut 18 inches of ribbon and set it aside.

2. Cut 3 inches of florist's wire and set it aside.

3. Take your ribbon and measure 6 inches from one end.

4. 

   Silver and gold ribbons sparkle in the Christmas tree lights.

   Fold the ribbon into 6-inch loops until you are 6 inches from the other end of the ribbon. Hold the ribbon together at the center while folding and holding each loop as you go.

5. Secure the center of your bow by looping the wire around it.

6. 

   A too-tight knot will take away from the overall effect.

   Knot the 18-inch ribbon in its center loosely.

7. Center the knot over the wire at the center of your bow loops.

8. Tie the ribbon around the wired loops.

9. Cut a piece of wire 5 inches long.

10. Thread the 5-inch wire through the back of the bow's knot.

11. 

    Bows aren't just for presents.

    Position the bow on the top of your Christmas tree, and twist the wire to hold it in place.

Tips & Warnings

• Following these steps will create an 8-inch bow. To make a larger bow, add a half a yard of ribbon for every 2-inch increase.

• Use wire-edged ribbon to make your bow stand up more and so that you can manipulate its shape.
