Butane Lighters Refill Instructions

Learn how to refill a butane lighter.

Butane lighters are often very attractive smoking accessories, and part of the enjoyment of the smoking process. Although the initial price is steeper than that of disposable versions, the fact is that, with decent maintenance, they last longer than the plastic ones. Additionally, a refill can of butane gas is infinitely cheaper over time than a series of the throw-away lighters. If you keep the lighter and its mechanisms clean, you will be able to use this tool for a number of years.

Instructions

    • 1

Wait for the lighter to completely cool after its last use before beginning this process.

    • 2

Find the large, brass screw with the standard slot on the bottom side of the lighter. This is the flame-height adjuster. Use the small screwdriver to turn it to the minimum setting, without forcing the movement.

    • 3

Push the valve on the bottom of the lighter, again using the screwdriver, to release any air out of the tank so that the butane will fill it. Stop when the hissing sound ceases.

    • 4

Shake the refill can of butane gas and inject the can's stem straight into the valve from Step 3. Allow the gas to fill for five seconds and remove the can from the valve. Listen for a hiss and be aware of gas leaks, at which point you should use the adapter that came with the gas can. Otherwise, adjust the lighter and the gas together to a straighter position to be sure that you are filling the lighter correctly.

    • 5

Wait for four minutes for the lighter mechanism and the gas to reach the same temperature as each other, and as the room.

    • 6

Re-adjust the flame-height control by turning it counterclockwise, toward maximum, until you have set it where you like it.

    • 7

Keeping the lighter away from your face, carefully light it. If you do not see a flame, repeat Steps 2 through 6.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have trouble turning the flame height screw to minimum, it might already be set correctly. Otherwise, try turning it the other way.

  • Always keep the lighter upside down when filling it, so that air does not enter the tank.
