How to Find Historical Share Prices

Finding stock prices is now easier than ever

Doing historical research on the price of a stock can yield a great deal of useful information about how the stock performs in various kinds of markets. Finding this information is usually relatively easy; stock price information is usually available from several sources.

1. Log on to your Internet brokerage account. If you use a full-service broker and he or she doesn't have time to get your research for you, you might still be able to find your information on your brokerage firm's website, depending upon the type and level of services to which you subscribe.

2. Type in the name of the stock for which you need historical data. A range of basic information will usually come up, such as a daily chart, company financial information and analyst commentary (if there is any.)

3. Click on the historical price link, tab or drop-down menu. It may be on the basic historical chart, or it may take you to a separate screen. Some basic charts contain the entire price history of the stock, while others are loaded separately because of the size of the file.

4. Select the date range for which you need information. You may be able to type in starting and ending dates, or you may only be able to select a starting date that goes through the last trading day. If you are looking for prices more than 10 years old, then you will probably have the former option.

5. Hit the send button and peruse your data. Print off the graph or chart or save it to your hard or flash drive or CD. If you cannot locate your data online, contact the company by phone or email and request it. The company will send you this information either in print or in a file.
