Measure the area of the exterior walls of your home. To do this, you will need to revert back to your high school geometry days. Recall that the area of a rectangle or square is found by measuring the length of its base, multiplied by its height. For example, if the length of one wall is 15 feet and the height is 9 fet, the area for that wall would be 135 feet.
Using a tape measure, you will need to measure every single exterior wall of your house. If you have triangular areas of your home that need siding, such as where the roof clefts together, the process of finding the area is essentially the same. The only difference being you will need to measure the length of the base of the triangle, multiplied by its height, and divide by two.
As you are measuring, write down each measurement you take on a notepad.

2
Add the measurements of each wall together. This figure is the total area in square feet of the exterior of your home, excluding the roof.

Multiply the total of all of your exterior walls by the price per square foot of the siding you wish to purchase. For example, if the combined area of all of your exterior walls is 2,300 square feet, and the siding you wish to install is $4 per square foot, your total would be $9,200 (2,300 X 4 = 9,200).
Your estimation will likely be different from the contractor's estimate, however this number should give you a very good idea of how much new vinyl siding will cost you before labor.
