How to Improve the Score of 390 to a Passing Score for the GED Exam

Taking your GED score from a 390 to passing requires effort and commitment.

Among the people who have a GED are comedian Bill Cosby and Wendy's founder Dave Thomas. You have the option of getting a GED if you do not currently have a high school diploma. Obtaining a GED requires you to pass a GED test at a testing center. To pass the test, your score for any one section must not be below 410, the combined score must be at least 2250, and the average score for all sections must not be below 450. Taking your GED score from 390 to a passing 450 or above requires effort and commitment.

Instructions

1. Buy GED study books. They are available at major bookstores and online bookstores. These books help you read and solve problems that are similar to those on a GED test. The books provide answers to each problem and explanations on the answer.

2. Join an online GED course. Online GED courses provide practice tests and methods for studying and preparing for the GED.

3. Use flash cards to help you study. Flash cards assist in quick learning and can be taken anywhere and used in many situations. Use flash cards in conjunction with GED preparation material, such as information from the GED study books.

4. Read more. A difficult section of the GED for many people is the writing section. Unlike math or reading comprehension, there are no problems you can study and answer. Reading is one of the most effective tools when it comes to better writing. Read books, magazines, newspapers, online content and anything else that contains the written word.

5. Use each section to your advantage. The GED is broken down into five sections: Language Arts-Writing, Social Studies, Science, Language Arts-Reading, and Mathematics. Language Arts-Writing is one section of multiple choice questions and an essay section. Mathematics is broken down into 25 multiple choice questions with use of a calculator, and 25 questions without use of a calculator. All remaining sections are multiple choice. Immediately discard the multiple choice answers that are obviously wrong, and focus on the remaining possibilities. This increases your chances of answering correctly.

6. Pay attention when taking the test. Reading directions, problems and passages slowly and thoroughly helps you grasp what is really being read and asked of you.

7. Review your answers. Often, when people do things for long periods of time, such as taking a test, they write the wrong answer unintentionally or leave words out of a sentence. Making this mistake on a GED can cost you points and ultimately the chance to pass.
