How to Use Steel Scrying Balls

How to Use Steel Scrying Balls thumbnail
Flat metals, like shields and knives, can be used for scrying too.

Scrying is the ancient art of gazing into something while in a meditative state in order to induce visions or premonitions of the future. Most people are familiar with the concept of fortune-telling by peering into a crystal ball, but historically a wide variety of materials have been used for scrying, including metal. The shiny surface makes polished steel well suited to the task as the mental images are reflected from the subconscious and easier to read.

Instructions

    • 1

Plan to practice divination at a time when you will not be disturbed. Make sure you are not hungry, sleepy, ill, uncomfortable or pressed for time. Eliminate as many distractions as possible by closing windows, drawing shades, silencing phones and turning off alarms.

    • 2

Prepare your scrying ball by cleaning it with soap and water or a stainless steel cleaning solution. Rub it with a soft cloth to make it shine and be sure there are no finger prints or streaks on it.

    • 3

Create an environment conducive to fortune-telling. Dim the lights, light candles or burn incense if you wish. Dress your table or altar with a dark-colored cloth.

    • 4

Place your steel scrying ball on a stand or some kind of holder, such as a bowl. Position it and yourself so that you are comfortable and it is not reflecting your image back at you. Light sources, such as candles, may make it gleam in places but should not be strongly reflected back at you.

    • 5

Relax your body and your breathing as you normally would when you meditate or practice divination. Close your eyes and focus on the intent of your scrying session, call your spirit guides or say a prayer if you wish. Open your eyes when you are ready.

    • 6

Soften your gaze as you peer into the scrying ball. Try to see the surface as a gateway and let your gaze penetrate deep into it. Keep your mind clear, calmly acknowledging and letting go of any thoughts that happen to drift into your head.

    • 7

Be open to any images that might come. Be prepared to receive information in the form of feelings, voices in your mind, scents, tastes, or persistent thoughts. The point of scrying is to open yourself to the collective unconscious, or universal energies that contain all information, past and future; the information it doesn't necessarily have to come in the form of visual images.

    • 8

Sit back and relax, reflecting on your scrying session, when you feel you are finished. Write down the images you received so you can contemplate them further or review them later.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be patient and scry often. Fortune-telling skills improve over time with practice.

  • Keep your ball in a safe, cushioned container that will prevent it from collecting dust, lint, getting scratched or dented when you are not using it.

  • Don't use paper towels, tissues or cut- up shirt rags to clean your scrying ball as they will result in lint all over your ball.

  • Don't use music while scrying. Music stimulates mood and memory quite strongly; it can influence your visions and impressions.
