How to Attach Saturn Rings to a Costume
So your costume needs rings encircling it like Saturn's rings--attaching them becomes an issue. No matter how you do it, they will create movement and sitting problems. Except for stage costumes and other situations where the person will be mostly standing, you can manage the effect in a couple of simple ways. Depending on how firmly you need to position the rings, you can use either wire or string.
Instructions
-
Hoop Skirt Design
-
1
Make a waistband out of the same material as the costume, so it'll blend in.
-
2
Tie the smallest, innermost ring to the waistband with a length of string. Anchor the ring at the four compass points, so it will hang balanced.
-
-
3
Attach the next ring to the first, using more string. Repeat this process, attaching each new ring to the previous one until you've attached all the rings. In this design, the rings hang in layers, with the innermost ring at the top and the largest at the bottom of the tiers. It'll hang like the workings of a hoop skirt.
Wire Attachments
-
4
Make a matching waistband for the costume and set metal ring eyelets in the waistband and in the rings.
-
5
Connect the innermost ring to the waistband by using stiff wire and twisting the wire at the eyelet. If the ring itself is sturdy and stiff, you can connect each successive ring to the previous ring. If, however, the ring material is soft, connect each ring back to the waistband, meaning larger rings will require longer lengths of wire.
-
6
Thread the wire so that it goes under any interior rings. This will hide the wire and offer additional support to interior rings. Using stiff wire, your rings can stand out in line.
Hanging Rings
-
7
Attach string to each ring on opposite sides. For this very simple design, you'll only attach the rings at two points. The string should be as long as your upper torso, assuming the rings circle around your waist area.
-
8
Attach the strings to your costume's sleeves. Now, when the arms are extended, the rings will all hang at the same height and you'll have string connections running down your sleeves, most likely starting around your elbow for the inner ring and down to your wrist for the outermost ring.
-
9
Use this method only for a stage costume or other situations where the wearer will mostly stand still, because moving your arms will create excessive movement in the rings.
