Make your site stand out in search engines

You have a new website and you want people to visit it. But for that to happen, it needs to appear when they search for it. Getting your site to show up in search engines is a two-part process. First, you need to get your site indexed. "Indexed" means that the search engine has visited your site and knows where it is. An indexed site will show up if someone searches the domain name, but it might not show up for any keywords a person would actually search. Getting your site high enough in the results for someone to see it is the second part of the process.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose keywords for your site. These should be words or a phrase that accurately describe the content of your site. Use longer, related phrases for individual pages. For example, for a site about geese you might use "geese" or "Canadian geese" as the site keywords and for individual pages you could use keyword phrases such as "migration patterns of geese," "habitats of geese" and "how to care for geese." Check that the keyword phrases you choose are not ones that already have millions of search engine results, because that would make it harder to get your site to appear when people search. Use these keywords in your content, but in a way that reads naturally. You will be penalized in search engine results if you overuse your keywords.

    • 2

Create internal links between your pages. These internal links will allow a search engine to navigate your site and index the pages.

    • 3

Submit your site to social bookmarking sites such as Del.icio.us, StumbleUpon, or Reddit. Search engines regularly crawl these sites and will follow the links to index your site.

    • 4

Get quality "back links" to your site. This means getting other people to link to your site. One way to do this is to include your site address in comments on well-trafficked blogs, if appropriate. Try to get links on sites that have content with the same topic as your own. Those links count more towards improving how highly your site ranks in search results.

    • 5

Create quality content for your site on a regular basis. Search engines are designed to rank quality content higher, so by serving quality content you will eventually rank higher.

    • 6

Submit your site to the three main search engines if it is a new domain. The addresses are linked under "Resources." Doing this will ensure that the search engines crawl your new domain to index it.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be patient. It can take several weeks to get a new site indexed by a search engine.
