How to Apply for a Parking Permit thumbnail
A disabled parking permit can be a necessary option.

To park in a designated handicapped space, you will need a disabled parking permit. The permit may be issued on the license plate of the vehicle, as a tag that is hung on the rear view mirror, or a large sticker applied to the vehicle. In addition, you will receive an identification card indicating your disabled parking privileges. You can apply for a disabled parking permit if you have an eligible disability.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit a qualified medical professional to determine if you are eligible for a parking permit. Let the doctor know your intention to get a disabled parking permit so you can be examined. The doctor will let you know if your disability qualifies you for a permit.

Obtain an application form. Visit your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and request an application. Alternatively, the DMV in some states has the form available for download on its website.

Fill out and complete the application. Some of the information required on the form are your driver's license number, your vehicle information, your contact information, and your stated disability. Depending on the state, you may have to provide your physician's contact information so he or she can sign the application validating your disability. You may also have to have the application notarized by an independent notary public.

Review the application to make sure all the information is correct and factual.

    • 5

Write a check for any fees that must be submitted with your application.

    • 6

Submit the application form to the relevant authority in your state. In some states the form must be submitted to the DMV, while in other states, you must submit the form to your county tax collector's office. The relevant address will be clearly stated in the application. Mail the form along with any fees if applicable, or drop it off in person.
