How to Design Your Cube Storage Wall thumbnail
Create rows of cubes or space them apart.

When you have items thrown around your home or decorations you have no room to display, you can build a cube storage wall to solve your problem. Cube storage walls are made of several cube-shaped shelves of different sizes that are usually mounted onto your wall. These geometric shelving units can be filled with items to display or hide, creating a storage solution that fits into your home's design. When you design your cube storage wall, you must take into account the wall space you have to work with as well as the items you wish to store. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the height and width of the wall in inches with a tape measure. Write down your measurements. Multiple the height and width together to calculate the surface area of the wall. This will help you determine the space you have to design your cube storage wall. The total surface area for the cubes cannot exceed the surface area of your wall.

    • 2

Write down a list of items that will be placed in the storage cubes. For example, you may be creating the wall to store DVDs, books, pictures and a vase. Categorize the items to determine how many cubes you need for the wall.

    • 3

Choose the cubes that will store each item type. There are several different sizes of cubes, as well as interlocking cubes and rectangular shelving. Choose cubes that are large enough to store your items but not so large that there will be a lot of empty space leftover.

    • 4

Spread the cubes out face up on a large flat surface such as the floor in front of the wall. Move the cubes around the area until they are positioned to your satisfaction. You might choose to have two large cubes near the bottom with a row of three smaller cubes directly above them or spread the cubes out over the entire area of the wall.

    • 5

Measure the distance between each cube as they are arranged. Sketch an image of how the cubes are to be arranged as well as the distance between them so you can translate the measurements when it comes to installing the cubes on the wall.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep heavier items in cubes that are lower to the ground to prevent damage should they fall.

  • Consider painting the area of the wall inside each cube for a bold look to your storage cubes. Choose colors that match the rest of your decor or that blend with the cube color.

  • Add baskets to lower cubes on the storage wall to hide items such as children's toys or magazines when they are not in use.
