How to Close a Bank of America Checking Account

You may have decided to change banks or you have moved to a place where there is a bank more convenient than a Bank of America branch. Whatever the reason, you need to properly close your Bank of America checking account. Do not simply write a check for the amount of money you think you have in that account.

Instructions

    • 1

Verify that you have entered all the deposits and withdrawals into your checkbook register, and then adjust it to reflect the balance. Since there may be some charges or deposits you failed to enter, ask the Bank of America branch where you do your banking for an up-to-date statement of your account or call 800-622-8731.

    • 2

Open a checking account at your new bank before you close your account at Bank of America.

    • 3

Tell your employer about the move if you have your paycheck automatically deposited to your account. Otherwise, the Bank of America branch will return it and your pay will be delayed.

    • 4

Advise the recipients of routine payments that you are about to close your checking account at Bank of America. Give them the address and routing number of your new bank as well as the date on which they should begin billing you new bank for payments. If you use a banking program to make routine payments such as utility bills, change the name of the bank in that program.

    • 5

Inform Bank of America by telephone, mail or email that you no longer wish to use its online banking program, particularly if you have bills paid through that program.

    • 6

Write a check against your checking account at Bank of America once you have verified your balance. Take or mail this check to your new bank.

    • 7

Send a letter signed by all owners of the account to the Account Closure department of Bank of America telling them that you are closing your account. Also tell them how you would like any remaining balance transmitted.
